Srinagar: A gunfight between suspected militants and the government forces erupted early morning on Tuesday in Anantnag district of south Kashmir.

The gunfight has begun in Vailoo village of Kokernag area of Anantnag district. A joint team of police and army had launched a cordon and search operation in the village .

As the joint team of forces approached towards the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired upon the forces, triggering off a gunfight, reports said.

The Jammu and Kashmir police, in a statement on its official Twitter handle, confirmed that gunfight had started and further details shall follow.

As per local news agency GNS, three to four newly recruited militants are believed to be trapped.

The exchange of gunfire was on going when this report was filed.
