In 2017, 166% rise in civilian killings in J-K, says MHA report

Srinagar: In 2017, Jammu and Kashmir witnessed 166 percent increase in the number of civilians killed and 42 percent increase in the militant killings, compared to the previous year.

As per the Annual Report (2017-18) released by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), the year 2017 witnessed a 6.21 percent increase in the militancy incidents, while as 166.66 percent increase in the fatalities of civilians in comparison to corresponding period of 2016.


Since the year 2016, when popular rebel commander Burhan Wani was killed on 8 July 2016, the militancy as well as civilian protests have intensified. With this casualties also rose as support for militancy has been growing.

“However, there is 2.44% decrease in casualties of security forces in comparison to the corresponding period of 2016. During the year 2017, 42% more terrorists have been neutralized in comparison to the corresponding period of 2016,” the report read.

On Saturday, seven civilians were killed in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district when clashes erupted near the gunfight site, in which three militants and a trooper were killed. At least 60 were injured in clashes. Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) called for three day shutdown and a people’s march to Army cantonment in Srinagar on Monday, saying “Kill us all for once and all.”

Giving the details about the expenditures, the MHA report also adds that an amount of Rs. 500.00 crore was sanctioned in 2017 to the Jammu and Kashmir for the deployment of state-of-the-art Security and Law Order System.

“An amount of Rs. 203.96 crore has also been sanctioned for the purchase of various high end equipment i.e. CCTV surveillance systems etc,” it added.
