Srinagar gunfight: Internet snapped, schools and colleges shut

Srinagar: Internet services suspended in Srinagar, while schools, colleges and university were closed today after two militants, a civilian and a cop was killed in a gunfight at Fateh Kadal area of Srinagar city.

The step was taken as a precautionary measure by the authorities early in the morning.


The internet services were suspended after forces came to know about the presence of militants in the area. Two militants were killed in the gunfight.

As the news of the encounter spread in the area, clashes erupted after local youth started throwing stones on government forces, who retaliated by pellets and tear gas shells. Locals said that some youths have been arrested during the clashes.

Reports said that after gunfight was over, many photo journalists were barred from performing their duties and were beaten up by government forces as they were clicking the photographs near the encounter site. Moreover the area is sealed off by police and public movements have been restricted to avoid mass gathering.
