Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and President People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Mehbooba Mufti visited North Kashmir’s Boniyar on Friday to pay her condolence to the mother, who lost her nine year old girl to the brutal rape followed by her death.
All the five accused were apprehended by the Jammu and Kashmir Police two days after the incident took place, which also included the family members of the girl – stepmother and stepbrother.
Mufti along-with the senior leaders of PDP, Altaf Bukhari and Raja Aijaz Ali sympathized with the victim’s family.
Addressing the media in Baramulla, Mufti condemned the brutal act and said: “The gory act of rape and brutal murder of a 9 year old kid at Boniyar has shamed us all. The family is devastated and our collective social values questioned. Time we introspect and call these acts out for what they are- barbarism.”
The event took place in Boniyar on the night of 25 August. Condemnations were poured from all across Kashmir, including the civil society members and the political parties.
Pro-freedom leader, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, took to Twitter and wrote, “Extremely shocked at the details of the horrific rape. The heartlessness and moral turpitude shown by the perpetrators of this crime is unbelievable. It calls for severe punishment to the accused.”
Former JNUSU Vice President and student leader, Shehla Rashid, also took to Twitter and lauded the Baramulla Police for solving the case on time and taking the quick action against the perpetrators.
“Uri rape and murder has once again shaken the people of Kashmir. The gory details of the incident make one shiver. How can a mother make her own son rape his step sister!!! Thanks to SSP Baramulla @hussain_imtiyaz and his team for making prompt arrests. That’s some solace!” she wrote.
